Tarique Rahman will take oath today as the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh. The ceremony will be held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Complex at 4:00 pm. President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath. New Members of Parliament will be sworn in earlier at 10:00 am, followed by cabinet formation.

Why The Venue Is Different This Time

Traditionally, Bangladesh prime ministers take oath at Bangabhaban. This time it is different. The ceremony will take place at the South Plaza of the Parliament Complex in Dhaka. That shift has drawn attention.

Officials from the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat confirmed the schedule. MPs will first take oath in the morning. Later in the afternoon, Rahman and his cabinet members will be sworn in. Around 1,200 guests, local and foreign, are expected to attend. Security is tight but calm.

How BNP Won A Clear Mandate

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party secured a landslide victory in the February 12 general elections. According to the Election Commission, BNP won 209 out of 297 seats. Jamaat-e-Islami secured 68 seats. Voter turnout stood at 59.44 percent.

These were the first elections after the 2024 uprising that removed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power. Her Awami League party was barred from contesting. The political field changed sharply after that.

For many voters, this election felt like a reset. A fresh start, some would say. BNP’s victory gives Rahman a strong majority in Parliament.

Who Is Attending The Ceremony

Several foreign leaders and senior representatives will attend the oath ceremony. From India, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will represent New Delhi. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is also expected.

Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay will be present. Pakistan’s Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal is also expected in Dhaka. Sri Lanka’s Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa will attend as well.

The presence of regional leaders shows how closely South Asia is watching this transition.

Constitution Reform Commission Surprise

There is another layer to today’s events. Members of a proposed Constitution Reform Commission are also expected to take oath. This follows a referendum that reportedly received majority approval earlier this month.

Some newly elected MPs have expressed quiet unease. The idea that Parliament may function as a reform commission for 180 days has raised questions. How both roles will operate together is still not fully clear. That uncertainty lingers in political circles.

Replacing The Interim Government

Rahman will replace interim chief Muhammad Yunus, who led the country after the 2024 political upheaval. During that period, Dhaka’s relations with New Delhi saw visible strain.

Rahman’s leadership may bring a shift in tone. His early gestures after the election hinted at reconciliation. He visited rival leaders, including Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman and National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam. The meetings were described as cordial.

He will be the first male Prime Minister of Bangladesh since 1991. That in itself marks a political moment.

What This Means For Bangladesh

Bangladesh stands at a sensitive point. Political vacuum, unrest, and minority attacks had shaken public confidence in recent years. Now a strong parliamentary majority gives the incoming government stability, at least on paper.

Economic management, law and order, and constitutional reform will dominate the early months. Foreign policy will also matter, especially ties with India, China, and regional partners.

The oath ceremony today is more than a formality. It closes one chapter and opens another. Expectations are high, perhaps too high. But that is how transitions often begin.

By evening, Bangladesh will have a new Prime Minister in office. The real test starts after the applause fades.
