In a historic opening to a major air campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says it's fighter jets have dropped more than 2,000 bombs on Iranian military targets within roughly 30 hours of the start of conflict. IDF claims that air superiority was secured on the very first day of fighting.
According to the IDF and military spokespeople, this massive barrage involved hundreds of aerial strikes targeting Iranian missile batteries, air-defense systems, command centers, and regime infrastructure across western and central parts of Iran.
Air Campaign at Massive Scale
The operation by the Israeli Air Force reportedly featured more than 700 combat missions in the opening phase alone. The rapid achievement of air supremacy allowed Israeli jets to carry out precision strikes deeper inside Iranian territory, hitting ballistic missile launchers and other critical military assets.
This offensive is part of what Israel has codenamed “Operation Roaring Lion,” conducted alongside the United States’ “Operation Epic Fury.” U.S. forces, including strategic bombers and carrier groups, have also launched sustained air and missile strikes on Iranian targets.
Israeli and U.S. leaders say the strikes are intended to significantly degrade Iran’s missile capabilities and leadership command structure while deterring further aggression. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasized that while the campaign may take time, it need not stretch into a prolonged war, but could reshape the regional balance.
Military analysts suggest that while the initial bombardment has been intense, securing long-term strategic goals such as degrading Iran’s missile and drone production capacity, neutralizing its regional proxy networks, and reshaping its political leadership will require sustained multi-domain operations involving air, cyber, and intelligence assets.
