China Accident News Today Three Trapped After Coal Mine Collapse in Shaanxi

Beijing, Three workers remain trapped following a coal mine accident in Zhenping County, Shaanxi Province, northwest China, local authorities reported Friday. The incident occurred around 3:30 pm on Thursday when part of an underground tunnel collapsed during rectification work. Eight workers were on site, five of whom escaped safely.

Mine Safety Concerns and Rescue Challenges

The coal mine, established in 1998, has been under rectification since March 2024 due to safety concerns. Preliminary assessments indicate that approximately 500 cubic meters of debris were involved in the collapse. Rescue operations are ongoing, but authorities have noted that rainfall is hampering the efforts.

Recent Coal Mining Accidents in China

This incident follows a series of mining accidents in China in recent months. On September 11, six workers trapped in the Fuli coal mine in Heilongjiang Province were rescued after nearly 30 hours. In August, seven miners died in a collapse at the Shuijingkeng Mine in Fujian Province, while in April, a carbon dioxide outburst in a Gansu coal mine killed five workers and injured nine others.

Ongoing Investigations and Safety Measures

Authorities are continuing rescue operations in Shaanxi and investigating the cause of the tunnel collapse. These incidents highlight ongoing safety challenges in China’s coal mining sector, despite rectification and emergency response efforts.
