Starlink Begins Trials in Mumbai Before Full India Launch

Elon Musk’s Starlink has finally started trial runs in Mumbai, taking one more big step toward launching satellite internet across India. The company, officially registered as Starlink Satellite Communications Pvt. Ltd., has also opened its first Indian office in Mumbai’s Chandivali area. It has leased a 1,294 sq. ft. workspace for ₹2.33 crore over five years, marking its first physical presence in the country.

These trials are meant to show Starlink’s technology in action — how fast, stable, and reliable its internet really is. The tests are taking place from October 29 to 31, and invited guests, including industry experts and government officials, are getting a first-hand experience of its performance.

Starlink’s Internet Could Reach Even India’s Remote Corners

The biggest promise of Starlink is simple — internet anywhere. Its satellite-based system can beam high-speed broadband directly from space, even in villages or hilly areas where fiber cables don’t reach. This could change digital access for millions of Indians who still struggle with poor connectivity.

According to reports, Starlink plans to start commercial operations by early 2026, possibly between January and February. But this depends on how fast it gets government approval and spectrum clearance from the Department of Telecommunications and TRAI.

Regulatory Green Signal Still Pending

While the company is clearly ready to go, official permission remains the last step. Starlink is currently awaiting government clearance for spectrum allocation and licensing. Once approved, it will be among the first global satellite broadband providers to operate in India, competing directly with Bharti-backed OneWeb and Amazon’s Project Kuiper.

Experts believe that Starlink’s entry could spark major competition in India’s internet market. With global satellite coverage and advanced technology, it could push existing players to improve quality and cut prices.

Expected Plans, Prices, and Setup Costs

As per early estimates, Starlink’s internet service in India might cost around ₹30,000 for initial setup, including equipment like the satellite dish and Wi-Fi router. Monthly subscription fees are expected to start at around ₹3,300, with plans offering speeds between 25Mbps and 225Mbps.

Reports also mention that Starlink will establish gateway stations in nine cities — Mumbai, Noida, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Ahmedabad. These will ensure smooth data transmission and better speed for users across the country.

What Starlink’s Arrival Means for India

If Starlink gets the green signal soon, it could completely transform India’s digital landscape. From online education in villages to e-commerce in rural towns, satellite broadband could bridge India’s digital divide once and for all.

Elon Musk’s vision of “internet for all” may finally become a reality in India — and the Mumbai trials could be the start of a new digital era.
