When is the Seventh Day of Navratri?
Shardiya Navratri 2025’s seventh day will fall on 29 September 2025 (Monday).
The Form of Maa Kalaratri
Maa Kalaratri, the seventh form of Navadurga, is considered a mysterious yet supremely powerful manifestation. Her complexion is deep black, giving her the name Kalaratri (meaning “the dark night”). • Her appearance may seem terrifying, with disheveled hair and a garland sparking like lightning. • Three fiery eyes radiate flames, and even her breath emits fire. • Her mount is a donkey, symbolizing unyielding strength to overcome adversities. • Her right upper hand is in Abhaya Mudra (removing fear), and the right lower hand in Varada Mudra (granting boons). • In her left hands, she carries a sword (justice and protection of dharma) and a lotus flower (purity and spiritual energy).
Despite her fearsome look, she blesses devotees with auspiciousness, which is why she is also called Shubhkari.
The Legend of Maa Kalaratri
According to mythology, when demons Shumbha, Nishumbha, and their generals Chanda and Munda began terrorizing the universe, Maa Durga assumed her fierce form as Kalaratri. • Her terrifying appearance sent demons fleeing in panic. • She killed Chanda and Munda, offering their heads to Maa Chamunda, earning her the name Chamunda. • Later, she fought Raktabeej, a demon whose blood drops spawned new demons. Maa Kalaratri drank his blood before it could touch the ground, ultimately slaying him.
Through her valor, she liberated gods and humanity from demonic oppression. This story is vividly described in the Durga Saptashati and Markandeya Purana.
