Energy conservation is no longer a choice but a daily responsibility, President Droupadi Murmu said on December 14 while addressing National Energy Conservation Day in New Delhi. She clearly stated that saving energy is the most urgent need today, not tomorrow. Her message focused on simple actions, smarter usage, and collective effort from every citizen. The President linked energy saving directly to clean air, safe water, and a secure future for coming generations.

Energy Conservation As The Cleanest Source Of Energy

While speaking at the National Energy Conservation Awards 2025, President Murmu described energy conservation as the most environment friendly and reliable source of energy. She explained that conserving energy does not only mean using less power. It actually means using energy wisely, responsibly, and in a planned manner. This idea connects daily habits with larger climate goals, which many people often forget.

She said small steps like switching off unused appliances, using energy efficient devices, and relying on natural light can create a big impact. These actions may look ordinary but they slowly reduce carbon emissions and protect natural resources.

Simple Habits That Make A Real Difference

The President highlighted how everyday choices shape the nation’s energy future. She spoke about reducing unnecessary electricity use, improving ventilation in homes, and choosing renewable options like solar energy. These steps are affordable and practical for most families. When done regularly, they help lower pollution levels and improve overall quality of life.

She also pointed out that energy conservation helps maintain clean air and safe water sources. It supports a balanced ecosystem, which is often disturbed due to overuse of fossil fuels. According to her, each unit of energy saved shows our respect for nature and concern for future generations.

Role Of Youth And Awareness In Energy Goals

President Murmu strongly stressed the importance of awareness among children and youth. She said young minds play a key role in achieving national energy goals. When children learn energy saving habits early, they carry them for life. This creates long term change that policies alone cannot achieve.

She added that community participation is essential. Energy efficiency is not limited to government buildings or industries. Homes, schools, offices, and local markets all matter equally. Behaviour change, she said, is the real engine behind energy transition.

Clean Energy As A Tool For Growth And Empowerment

The President also spoke about how affordable and clean energy empowers communities. Access to clean energy supports local economies and opens new growth opportunities. Green energy is not just about electricity generation. It helps reduce inequality and supports inclusive development across regions.

She expressed satisfaction over major government initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These schemes are reducing India’s dependence on fossil fuels and promoting renewable adoption at scale.

India’s Energy Efficiency Progress So Far

Citing official data, President Murmu said India’s energy efficiency efforts during 2023–24 led to savings of 53.60 million tonnes of oil equivalent. This resulted in large economic savings and a major cut in carbon dioxide emissions. These numbers show that conservation efforts are already delivering results.

She also mentioned government measures like Renewable Consumption Obligation and Production Linked Incentive schemes, which are supporting clean energy growth and efficiency across sectors.

Living In Harmony With Nature

Referring to India’s cultural values, President Murmu linked energy conservation with the global message of Lifestyle for Environment or LiFE. She said living in harmony with nature has always been part of Indian thinking. Energy conservation is simply a modern expression of that old wisdom.
