Over 560 Million Jan Dhan Accounts Opened in the Last 11 Years: Nirmala Sitharaman
The Prime Minister’s Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has brought a significant change towards financial inclusion in India. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 28, 2014, the scheme has completed a decade. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today announced that over 560 million Jan Dhan accounts have been opened so far. Millions of people have connected to the banking system for the first time through these accounts. Sitharaman said that the total deposits in these accounts amount to Rs 2.68 lakh crore. Additionally, over 380 million Rupay cards have been issued to enable easy digital transactions.
The Finance Minister highlighted that 67% of accounts were opened in urban and semi-urban areas, and 56% of the accounts are in the name of women. This shows the government’s focus on reaching remote areas and those without banking access. As a result, the poor and marginalized communities are becoming financially empowered.
Union Minister of State Pankaj Chaudhary said PMJDY is not just a banking account scheme but a program that offers dignity, empowerment, and opportunities. In 2021, the Prime Minister emphasized that every household should have a bank account and every adult should have insurance and pension coverage. Efforts to achieve this are ongoing.
The government has also launched a saturation campaign, setting up camps in 270,000 villages nationwide. People can enroll in Jansuraksha schemes, open PMJDY accounts, and update their KYC details at these camps. MoS Finance said the campaign aims to provide financial services to the common people.
One special feature of PMJDY is that it does not require a minimum balance, nor are there any account maintenance charges, allowing the middle and lower classes to benefit from banking facilities. The scheme aims to promote digital payments and banking awareness. This initiative not only boosts the country’s economy but also economically empowers rural women. Women now use their accounts for small businesses, savings, and digital transactions. Pankaj Chaudhary stated that PMJDY is one of the world’s most successful financial inclusion programs. It proves what can be achieved when the government is committed to public welfare. The program has laid a strong foundation for financial inclusion in India, reaching nearly every household.
In 11 years, PMJDY has connected millions to the banking system, empowered rural people and women financially, and made digital payments easier. The scheme has become a model for financial inclusion in India. Thus, PMJDY is not just a bank account scheme but a means of opportunity and dignity for the poor and marginalized. It demonstrates how significant social change can be brought about by government initiatives and continuous efforts.
