Today on the last day of the year 2018, many people from across the world must have decided their new year resolutions i.e. how they want to spend their new year and they start working towards achieving that goal.

Similarly, many countries around the globe have strategies and planned how they want their 2019 to be. Many countries have dedicated the year 2019 to different things.

International year of the periodic table:

The United Nations has designated 2019 as the international year of the periodic table of chemical elements. The year will coincide with the 150th anniversary of the table's creation by Dmitry Mendeleev. It will also mark a number of other milestones in the history of chemistry, including the discovery of phosphorus 350 years ago, Antoine Lavoisier’s categorisation of 33 elements in 1789 and the formulation of the law of the triads by Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner 190 years ago. The decision was announced by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (Iupac).

Chinese Calendar celebrates 2019 as the Year of Earth Pig:

According to Chinese calendar 2019 is a Year of Earth Pig, which will start from Feb. 5 (Chinese New Year) and will last to Jan. 24, 2020. Pig is the twelfth in the 12-year cycle of Chinese zodiac sign. The Years of the Pig include 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019, 2031, 2043... and so on.

'Year of Active Investments and Social Development' in Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan has declared the 2019 as the “Year of Active Investments and Social Development". The announcement was made by the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev in a message to the Parliament. He noted that everyone should work to attract investment in the country and improve the investment climate.

In Uzbekistan 2018 was declared the "Year of Supporting Active Entrepreneurship, Innovative Ideas and Technologies".

UAE declares 2019 as the 'Year of Tolerance'

The UAE President, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has declared 2019 as the 'Year of Tolerance', to highlight the UAE as a global capital for tolerance, instilling the values of co-existence and peace in local, regional and international communities.

Sheikh Khalifa said that the Year of Tolerance will focus on five main pillars and will "Instill values of tolerance carries on Sheikh Zayed's legacy and teachings,"

Sheikh Khalifa also added, "We look forward to further contributing towards building societies that believe in the values of tolerance, cohesion and dialogue, and establishing concrete models improving tolerance and co-existence both regionally and internationally."

He further said, "the Year of Tolerance will be celebrated as a national effort towards further advancing a decades-long dream of creating a tolerant and cohesive society, open to peoples of varying cultures and religions from around the world. The UAE and Tolerance go hand-in-hand."

Ghana Celebrates 2019 as “The Year of Return”

To mark 400 years since the anchoring of the first slave ship in Jamestown, Virginia, Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo declared the year 2019 as “The Year of Return”.

“In the year 2019, we open our arms even wider to welcome home our brothers and sisters,” said Ghana President.

CTO declares 2019 ‘The Year of Festivals’ in the Caribbean

The Barbados-based Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) has declared 2019, the “Year of Festivals in the Caribbean” following the last year’s successful 'Year of Rejuvenation'.

CTO said that as a result, the region will celebrate the unique rhythm and tempo of each CTO destination throughout the new year. The Year of Festivals will highlight music, art, sailing, lights, food, rum, religious, literary and dance festivals celebrated throughout the region.

“The Year of Festivals will focus on the fascinating events that have become an integral part of the Caribbean tourism calendar. Festivals help to energize communities across the region, while giving visitors more reasons to enjoy our destinations,” said CTO Secretary General, Hugh Riley.

“In addition to providing an opportune time for vacationers to visit, these celebrations also emphasize the unique characteristics that define the many diverse backgrounds and traditions which comprise the Caribbean’s cultural tapestry,” he added.
