The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) virus is spreading rapidly in China. After this, concerns have also arisen in India about it. The common symptoms of HMPV are cough, fever, nasal congestion, shortness of breath and wheezing. These symptoms are similar to the symptoms of infections caused by other respiratory viruses. In severe cases, it can cause bronchitis and pneumonia.

According to a report published on the website of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2023, it was reported that according to the data of respiratory infectious diseases from 2009 to 2019, HMPV is ranked eighth among the eight fastest causing respiratory infections, with a positivity rate of 4.1 percent.

How does HMPV spread?

HMPV spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. If this virus has spread in the environment, then coming in contact with it can also spread the infection. HMPV spreads the most in winter.

How to stay safe from this virus?

Cleanliness is very important to stay safe from HMPV. It spreads when a person infected with this virus coughs, sneezes or talks, so it is important to wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose and mouth, as this can transmit the virus to your body. If you feel unwell or have symptoms such as a cough, sore throat or fever, stay home to avoid spreading the virus to others.

Wear a mask in crowded public places to reduce the risk of infection. Regularly clean doorknobs, light switches and smartphones. Keep your distance from people who are showing symptoms. If you have any symptoms of HMPV, see a doctor immediately.
