Every Marvel fan knows that there are a few plotholes in the MCU, but as a fan, little inconsistencies are easy to ignore. One thing that impossible to ignore is the fact that Iron Man is a d*ck. Over the course of a decade, Tony Stark has managed to fuel the MCU's black market weapons trade, he’s inspired a cavalcade of evil copycats to build their own robot suits, and he’s ultimately responsible for Earth being attacked multiple times.

Tony Stark is the catalyst for most of the problems faced by the Avengers. By putting his face out in the open as the identity behind Iron Man, he put a bullseye on Earth, and his smug attitude makes every situation he’s in toxic. No wonder aliens keep trying to destroy the planet.

In the wake of seeing a dream of a shocking future where every one of the Avengers are dead and the Earth is destroyed on the grounds that Tony didn't "accomplish more," he chooses to make the Ultron worldwide guard program to secure the planet. While his expectations were great, his execution was messy, best case scenario. Distinct and Banner cull a yellow stone from Loki's staff and, without ever truly examining it, simply connect the jewel to a computerized reasoning entrusted with the mission of securing Earth.

Distinct doesn't think to utilize Asimov's Laws of Robotics as a security net, and obviously, the AI rapidly chooses that the most ideal approach to ensure Earth is to annihilate humankind. On the off chance that Stark had taken somewhat additional time figuring things through, the Avengers wouldn't have needed to prevent a robot from attempting to transform a sovereign country into a comet fit for wiping out all life.

Who knew that legal documents would have such a devastating impact on the MCU? Feeling guilty about his own complicity in previous world-threatening events, Stark puts his full support behind the Sokovia Accords and the plan to give the UN oversight over the Avengers.

When Stark forced the Avengers to sign the Accords, he created a rift in the team that was exploited not only by Helmut Zemo but also by Thanos in his quest to gather the Infinity Stones. By forcing the issue of the Accords, Tony actively drives a wedge between Earth's greatest heroes, making sure that there's no centralized group of first responders ready when the Black Order attack.

Despite the fact that Stark knows Bucky was mentally programmed when he murdered his folks and that Zemo demonstrated to them the video of their passings as a ploy to get the legends to battle, Stark can't control himself.
