Washington: United Sates President Barack Obama has vetoed the Bill which would have allowed kin of 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia.

The legislation called Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA) was established by a 1976 law letting Americans to sue foreign countries for terrorism on the US soil.

It may be recalled that 15 out of 19 militants who hijacked jetliners to carry out the 9/11 attack were from Saudi Arabia while two from United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Other highlights:

  • JASTA was passed by the US Senate in May last while the house voted on it days before 9/11’s 15th anniversary.
  • The Bill met with strong public support after being passed in the House and Senate.
  • Republican majority leaders in Congress said they were confident of having enough votes to override the veto.
