Mumbai: On Tuesday, Joe Biden spoke to Russia's President Vladimir Putin over the phone after assuming the office of US President. The White House has confirmed this.

During the conversation, Biden expressed concern over the announcement of a reward for the arrest of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Russia's involvement in cyber espionage and the killing of American soldiers in Afghanistan.

The White House told that US President Biden spoke with President Putin of Russia. He reaffirmed America's firm support for Ukraine's sovereignty and took up other matters. Other issues include SolarWinds Hack, a report of Russia holding a bounty on the killing of American soldiers in Afghanistan, interference in the 2020 US election.

Talk on arms control treaty:

Biden told the Russian president that the two countries should finalize a 5-year extension of the arms control treaty ending next month. But before negotiating with Putin, Biden wanted to talk to European colleagues including Britain, France and Germany, in addition to his staff.

He also spoke to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg before speaking to Putin on Tuesday. Russia and the US exchanged documents to expand the New Start Nuclear Agreement. In the days to come, both sides will complete the necessary formalities.
