Thirteen killed in Indonesian aeroplane crash in Papua

Jakarta (Indonesia): Thirteen people including three pilots were killed when an Indonesian military Hercules C-130 aeroplane crashed in the easternmost province of Papua on Sunday.

Air Force chief of Staff Agus Supriatna said that the bad weather was suspected to be the cause of crash.

What else Agus Supriatna said?

  • The plane was carrying 12 tons of food supplies and cement from Timika to Wamena, a distance of about 200 kilometers (125 miles).
  • The plane took off from Timika at 0535hours and crashed four minutes before it was scheduled to land in Wamena, the capital of the mountainous district of Jayawijaya.
  • The plane was carrying three pilots and 10 other military personnel.

Rescue team and police officials were immediately deployed to spot as soon as they were informed.

It may be mentioned that this was the third severe accident within a month in Indonesia.

On November 24

Three people were killed when a Bell 412 EP helicopter from the Indonesian army crashed in the Indonesian part of Borneo Island.

On December 1

A police plane with 13 people aboard crashed into the sea on the way to the island of Batam, near Singapore.
