Eight IS terrorists arrested from Pakistan’s Punjab province

Islamabad: As many as eight Islamic State (IS) terrorists have been apprehended by the Pakistan police and intelligence agency officials under suspicion of planning a ‘large-scale’ terror attack in Punjab province.

“Following a tip-off, four of the IS members were on Friday last detained from Lahore while the other four were arrested during a raid in Gujranwala district, about 80kms from Lahore,” said the country’s Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) spokesperson.

He also said that the detained men were associated with militants who had killed police officials in Faisalabad and Lahore and planning to attack government installations in Punjab province.

Other highlights:

  • 1,600kgs of explosives, four non-electric detonators, safety fuse as well as other lethal weapons were recovered from the militants’ hideout.
  • According to CTD, the detained militants had a plan to target officials of law enforcement agencies in Gujranwala.
