7.4 magnitude earthquake rocks Christchurch of New Zealand
Wellington: A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 rocked the north-northeast region of Christchurch in New Zealand on Sunday.
“We are currently gathering situational awareness and will share information as it comes in. At this stage, there have been no significant reports of damage across the city. Expect aftershocks and look after those around you,” said Christchurch Civil Defence Emergency Management.
In the wake of earthquake, residents living on east coast were asked to move to higher grounds. There are no immediate reports of casualty or other serious damage so far.
"We were asleep and woken to the house shaking. We are getting aftershocks at the moment,” said a resident of Christchurch.
New Zealand has also issued a warning. Earlier, Christchurch was jolted by 6.3 quake leaving 185 dead in 2011.
