UP Couple 'sells' newborn for Rs 1.5 lakh to buy a car in Kanpur

KANPUR: A couple in Kannauj district of UP allegedly sold their newborn son to a businessman for Rs 1.5 lakh to purchase a second-hand car.

The incident, which took place in Tirwa Kotwali police station area, came to light after the maternal grandparents of the child approached cops on Thursday and lodged a complaint against the parents.

The child was born to Dulari Devi (name changed) from Sataur three months ago, police said. Inspector Kotwali Shailendra Kumar Mishra said the grandparents alleged in their complaint that their daughter and her husband had sold the child to a Gursahaiganj-based businessman for Rs 1.5 lakh "to buy a four-wheeler". "While the baby is still in the possession of the trader, we have called the woman and her husband for questioning on Friday," Mishra said, adding the couple had purchased a second-hand car recently.
