Samajwadi Party leader shot dead in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Sumar Singh was gunned down by unidentified bike-borne assailants in Ballia in Uttar Pradesh. A passerby also suffered a gunshot injury in the incident.

The assailants shot him in the head near the Lalganj-Gopalpur road of Baghaut village, on Sunday night, when Singh was on his way to a pre-wedding function along with his friend Chunnu Misra.

  • The injured passerby was identified as Bhutali Yadav. He was immediately taken to the district hospital.
  • The family of the deceased leader, the attackers hailed from the same village.

The police reportedly reached the crime scene after several hours which caused an angry mob to raise anti-police and anti-government slogans.

Police superintendent Sujata Singh stated that an FIR against four people had been lodged by the son of the deceased. She said, “ We are investigating the matter.Soon, we will put the culprits behind the bars."

It may be mentioned that Sumar Singh was a former district secretary of the SP.

It would be worth mentioning that the incident comes three days after two leaders belonging to the opposition Bahujan Samaj Party and the SP were killed in separate incidents in the state.
