Agra: One prisoner dies in Uttar Pradesh jail almost every day due to negligence or some other reason. And it is not an accusation made by an opposition leader against the state government. This has come to light in response to a query made under the Right To Information Act by a human right activist Naresh Paras from the jail department.

So it is official.

The activist has drawn the attention of authorities including governor and officials in the NHRC and Prime Minister’s Office in this regard and urged them to intervene and change the situation.

According to figures made available to him, over 2000 prisoners have died in the state during last 74 months . Calculated on daily basis it works to one death every 26 hours. These deaths occurred between January 2010 and February 2016.
