NHRC and NCM have different opinions on the Kairana mass exodus issue

Shamli: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) are at loggerheads on the Kairana exodus issue which had created much heat in the political circles a few months ago. It is still being debated in these circles but the tone changed.

Reports of the two organisations which contradict each other and which are available now may lead to a fresh debate. While the NHRC which had visited the area first and submitted its report had found the exodus report true to a large extent, the other body has expressed doubt over it .

It has added to the problems of the common man for he does not know whom to believe and whom not to, It is more so because the two organisations have different views on not one but several issues. The NHRC, for instance, supports the exodus report and confirms that members of a particular community had fled the area due to criminal activities of another community which was more powerful.

According to informed sources here on Tuesday, the commission for minorities calls this report baseless. There was no evidence to support this story. On the other hand, the NHRC team which claims to have spoken to 24 witnesses has said that Hindu women had been targeted for attack by goons which was the main reason for the Hindu families leaving the area. None could go to the police for fear of retaliation

The commission for the minorities also disputes the report of the other commission that thousands of riot victims had settled in the area and that it was one of the reasons for dominance and indulgence in criminal activities against the minority group.
