Muzaffarnagar: The Uttar Pradesh police knocked down criminal Nitin Thakur, who carrying a reward of Rs 50,000, in an encounter on Wednesday, said police.

One of his associates, however, managed to escape alive from the gunfight that took place at Nagla Khapar Meerpur. A Sub-Inspector and two constables have also sustained injuries in the encounter, and have been admitted to the district hospital.

According to the police, the criminals had come to the village to kills farmer Shyamveer.

It may be mentioned that this was the third encounter of a vicious criminal in the recent days in Meerut zone.

Nitin was absconding in several serious cases that include murder, attempt to murder, robbery, Arms Act and Gangster Act. Bulandshahr police was on a lookout for the criminal in six different cases.

Speaking over the incident, SSP Muzaffarnagar Anant Dev Tiwari said, "Farmer Shyamveer himself informed police about Nitin being in the village to kill him. Immediately reacting to the tip-off, police reached to the location and eliminated the criminal. His companion, however, managed to escape."

"Police has recovered an Italy-made pistol, a revolver, 10 cartridges and a motorcycle.

The father and brother of the farmer were already killed. Earlier on June 10, 2014, his brother, who was an Army man, was killed, while his father Shobharam, who had registered a murder case, was shot dead on January 26, 2017. Shyamveer had also registered a case of his father’s killing.

After the encounter ended, SSP Anant Dev Tiwari also reached at the village where villagers lifted him on their shoulders and also shouted slogans in police's favour.

It may be mentioned that following the rise in crimes, the UP government had given the charge of Meerut zone to Prashant Kumar. Since he took charge as the ADG Meerut Zone, around a dozen vicious criminals have been arrested. Earlier, Shamli police had killed Naushad aka Danny, who carried Rs 60,000 reward, and Sarvar, who carried Rs 10,000 reward.
