Mukhtar Ansari to remain in jail, Delhi HC refuses parole
New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Monday overturned the local court's decision of allowing parole to mafia-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari for poll campaigning in Uttar Pradesh.
Earlier, a local court had ordered to release the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader on parole till March 4 for poll campaigning.
The Delhi HC took the decision reacting on a petition filed by the Election Commission, which claimed that Ansari could influence the electorate in his Mau Sadar constituency in Mau district of Uttar Pradesh, which will go for polls in the sixth phaseof Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections on March 4.
It may be mentioned that Ansari, along with his family members, had joined Mayawati-led BSP on January 26.
Mukhtar Ansari has been jailed in connection with the killing of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Krishnanand Rai, who along with six others, was shot dead in Ghazipur in 2005.
