Deoband: The world famous Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband – located in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh – has issued a ‘fatwa’ against female foeticide.

“It is the first fatwa against sex-selective abortions. Furthermore, the act is forbidden by laws of the religion,” said Deoband spokesperson Maulana Ashraf Usmani on Tuesday last.

“We appeal to the followers of Islam to refrain from any such act that discriminates the girl child,” he added.

Highlights:

  • In 2001, there were 950 girls up to six years of age for every year and 1,000 boys of the same in the Muslim community.
  • In 2011, the number of girls went down to 942.
  • The vice-chancellor of the seminary has termed sex-selective abortions as ‘cold-blooded murders’.
  • Darul Uloom is the largest Islamic seminary of the country.
