Lucknow: Although investigating agencies have so far not made any headway in the murder of National Investigation Agency (NIA) officer Tanzil Ahmad, some important clues have given them some hope. On Tuesday, Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh, Javeed Ahmad and the additional director general (law and order) Daljeet Singh visited Sahaspur under Syohra police station in Bijnor, the spot where Tanzil was shot dead.

The DGP began monitoring the case after directions from Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav who asked him to nab the killers as early as possible.

Proceeding of Investigation:

  • The bullet shells found at the crime spot have been brought to Lucknow for forensic investigation.
  • NIA team found two types of bullets in the officer's body. Twelve bullets were fired at Tanzil Ahmad.

  • The post-mortem was held at the district hospital of Moradabad. The entire process was video graphed.

  • The police have taken the help of surveillance to reach the murderers.
  • The call details of Ahmad and his family members are being investigated, which contain mobile numbers from Idea, BSNL and Airtel.

  • The investigating team are also shortlisting mobile numbers from about 50,000 calls made during the time of the murder
  • They are mainly investigating those numbers which were made from SIM cards bought within a week of Tanzil's murder

Backgrounder:

  • Deputy Superintendent of NIA Tanzil Ahmad, who was liasioning officer of the Pathankot terror attack probe team, was killed by motorcycle-borne assailants on Saturday.
  • Tanzil sustained 12 bullets and succumbed to the injuries while on his way to hospital in Moradabad.
  • His wife also sustained bullet injuries and her condition was stated to be critical.
