Lucknow: As a relief to urban and rural power consumers of the state, the Uttar Pradesh ElectriCity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) has decided to do away with the regulatory surcharge imposed by UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) on consumers with effect from April 1. The surcharge varies for different distribution companies-2.84 per cent for Pashchimanchal, 1.14 per cent for Dakshinanchal, 1.03 per cent for Poorvanchal and 0.73 per cent for Madhyanchal.

By reducing the surcharge-one, one of two surcharges imposed till now, will curtail the bill of the consumers, UPERC Chariman Desh Deepak Varma announced on Monday. He, however, made it clear that the surcharge-two will remain in force till review of tariff for 2016-17.

In another major decision, the UPERC also waived off the 10 per cent surcharge on unmetered power consumers of rural area keeping in view of the drought conditions specially in Buldelkhand region of the state. The UPERC had set deadline December 31, 2015 which was extended till March 31,2016 for UP Power Corporation Limited to install the meters which it could not do.

About 75 lakh rural consumers will benefit from the waiver of surcharge due to unmetered connections.

Mr Verma said why the consumers should be punished if the UPPCL could not install the meters by stipulation time period.
