Allahabad: Poverty drove a Dalit woman in Uttar Pradesh to rent her womb. Her husband had deserted her nine years ago and she had two children to feed. Finding no other alternative she took this decision and had no regrets as the amount promised for her services was big-- Rs eight lakhs.

But, as in most cases, her happiness was short-lived. She has been carrying other's baby for six months but she has received no payment after the initial one. In addition to the total of Rs eight lakh she was promised Rs 50,000 each to her daughters.

She cannot go for legal termination of pregnancy because it is not allowed after five months. She cannot file a case against the man who had rented her womb because there was no written agreement between the two.

What has added to the misery is that the man who has been linked with the case is influential one. He is nephew of a man who has been a minister in the state and is one of the prominent BSP Dalit leader. To fight against him is a herculean task. Her case is pathetic, indeed.

Backgrounder:

  • The lady who is also a Dalit and a resident of Kaushambi district was approached by a man known to her on behalf of the former minister who was childless. His family condition, besides money promise, attracted her. Soon everything changed. She is neither here nor there. All her requests to the police and the middleman have fallen on deaf ears.
  • The Union government's proposal to put a ban on commercial surrogacy, in this background, is a welcome move. The proposal was accepted by the Union cabinet on August 24 and the draft bill is likely to be discussed in the two houses of parliament during the winter session.
