Lucknow: The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) protested in and outside the state assembly here on Wednesday against what it called “deteriorating law and order situation” in Uttar Pradesh.

The party’s protest outside the Vidhan Sabha, which was led by the state party president Keshav Prasad Maurya, was joined by a number of members of parliament, legislators and workers.

Party sources alleged that the police resorted to lathi-charge after water jets and tear-gas shells were fired to disperse the crowd failed to have a desired result. Denying the allegation, police sources claimed that some of the party workers had gone unruly and had tried to remove the barricade put up to prevent them from going further. The water jets were used only after that, they added.
