Lucknow: The Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court on Wednesday directed the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) to prohibit the use of red beacon on vehicles by some information commissioners (ICs) in Uttar Pradesh.

A division bench of Justice AP Sahi and Justice Sanjay Harkauli also directed SSP Lucknow to ensure that those not authorized do not move in red beacon vehicles and not violate the Motor Vehicle Act rules.

The order was passed after hearing a PIL filed by Adarsh Tripathi.

What was in the PIL?

  • It was alleged in the PIL that many ICs use the red beacon lights on their official vehicles.
  • They are not entitled for it under the Motor Vehicle Act.
  • For evidence, four photographs of vehicle showing red beacon lights on the official vehicles of ICs were presented in the court.
