Etah: Amid Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s hard efforts to fulfil Muslim quota promise before the next Assembly polls, Irrigation Minister Shivpal Singh Yadav on Thursday knocked the reservation idea on the head, saying it was not possible.

“Reservation to the Muslim community is currently not possible in the state following legal hurdles. According to law, there is a 50 per cent cap on reservations and that cannot be exceeded,” said Shivpal while speaking at the meeting of District Planning Committee (DPC) in Etah of UP.

Highlights:

  • Samajwadi Party, in its manifesto for 2012 assembly elections, promised to consider all Muslims as most backwards like Dalits and to provide them reservation.
  • Recently, Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari paid a visit to CM house in the state capital to remind the government of its promises made to Muslims before 2012 Assembly polls.
  • In UP, almost 30 Muslim castes are already included in the 25 per cent quota for backwards.
