Ambedkar Nagar: With the growing population, it is essential to preserve water to lead a quality life and someone has to be the torchbearer. Santosh Kumar Singh of Jahangirpur block here is doing an excellent job by conserving water and raising oyster in his own ponds.

He, not only, made himself economically empowered but also gave a better life to people working with him in his village. He has not only received applauds in his own village but has also been praised in nearby places for his remarkable efforts.

Santosh has developed ponds in Gorakhpur, Ballia, Deoria and Mau for raising Oyster and also reserves water. The Agriculture department has honored Santosh for his commendable work several times.

How Santosh began his work?

The first and the foremost thing for Santosh was to create a reservoir for rain water. For this, he converted his piece of land into a reservoir; converted it into a pond and started raising Oyster in it. Within a very short span of time, Santosh started meeting his financial needs and also helped people around him in becoming financially strong.

He soon became a role model for farmers in his area and several people started following his foot steps. Not only people in Uttar Pradesh, but several people in other states including Madhya Pradesh and Bihar were inspired to execute his way of water conservation techniques and petting fish and Oyster in ponds.

It takes 16 months to become a pearl from Oyster and a single pearl costs from Rs 300 to thousands. Rain water preservation helps in other farming needs and simultaneously, it also helps in fishery and oyster raising.
