UP cabinet to hold first cabinet meeting on April 4; likely to waive off farmers' loans

Lucknow: The newly formed Uttar Pradesh government will hold its first cabinet meeting on April 4, where it is believed that the government may fulfill its biggest poll promise of waiving off farmers' loans on Sunday.

According to a highly placed source in the UP ministry, the government will discuss over the roadmap for waiving off farmers' loans.

The cabinet ministers are also hold talks over swiftly winding up the pending works of Lucknow Metro, other developmental projects and implementation of Centre's 'Power for All' scheme in the state.

The announcement over 24-hour electricity in the villages and cheaper power tariffs is also likely to be made after the meeting. The cabinet nod to the state government's decision of signing the 'Power for All' agreement on April 14 is also expected on April 4.

It may be recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while campaigning in the state during assembly polls, had promised that farmers' loans would be waived off in the first cabinet meeting of the state. This apparently is the reason why the meeting was delayed.

The finance department has now prepared the plan for giving the sigh of relief to the farmers. The waived off amount will be paid to the banks by the state government.
