Gorakhpur: The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday suspended Dr Purnima Shukla of the BRD Medical College, where allegedly over 60 children had died following shortage of oxygen supply earlier in the month.

It is worth mentioning that Purnima Shukla is the wife of suspended Principal of BRD Medical College, Rajeev Shukla.

It may be recalled that the reports of shortage of oxygen supply came to the fore on the evening of August 12, when children suffering from encephalitis started dying due to no oxygen supply at the hospital.

Finding the Principal of the medical college prima facie guilty, the government had suspended him.

He, however, held himself innocent and blamed the supplying firm, Pushpa Sales, guilty for the deaths of the children.

Earlier in the day on Friday, the Allahabad High Court sought a response from the Uttar Pradesh government on the deaths of kids, including infants, at the BRD Medical College.

The court, while hearing a public suit filed by social activist Nutan Thakur, directed the Yogi Adityanath government and the Director General of Medical Health to file a detailed affidavit on the matter within six weeks and fixed October 9 as the next date of hearing.

Earlier on Thursday, taking action into the tragedy, the UP government transferred Gorakhpur Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Prabhunath, while District Magistrate (DM) Rajeev Rautela, who prepared the primary probe report, escaped action.
