Akharas in Kumbh mela take Shahi Snan with grand splendour

As per the centuries old custom, no one is allowed to enter the holy river before the akhadas finish their Shahi Snans. Once the sadhus are done with their Shahi Snan, common visitors can take a dip in the river.

Prayagraj: The Kumbh Mela 2019 began at 4 am on Tuesday morning with the holy Shahi Snan where sadhus beloning to 13 akhadas took a dip in the holy river with great pomp and show.

As per the centuries old custom, no one is allowed to enter the holy river before the akhadas finish their Shahi Snans. Once the sadhus are done with their Shahi Snan, common visitors can take a dip in the river.

It is believed that the ritual of Shahi Snan began during the 14th-16th century. During the Shahi Snan, the sadhus reach the river bank in decorated palkhis.

According to Hindu belief, taking a dip in the river before the mahurat helps one attain immortality.

The city of Prayagraj is all decked up for the Kumbh Mela. From street art to top-of-the-line tents to five star tents, the UP government has moved earth and heaven to make this religious event even more ostentatious and magnificent.
