Lucknow: World Oceans Day takes place every 8 June. The concept was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada's International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Brundtland Commission, i.e. the World Commission on Environment and Development, provided the inspiration for a global oceans day. The 1987 Brundtland Report noted that the ocean sector lacked a strong voice compared to other sectors. At the first World Oceans Day in 1992, the objectives were to move the oceans from the sidelines to the center of the intergovernmental and NGO discussions and policy and to strengthen the voice of ocean and coastal constituencies worldwide.

World Oceans Day is an annual observation to honor, help protect, and conserve the world's oceans. The ocean provides us with many resources and services including oxygen, climate regulation, food sources, medicine, and more. World Oceans Day also provides an opportunity to take personal and community action to conserve the ocean and its resources.

This year, the United Nations World Oceans Day will be focused on Gender and Ocean. We will have to connect the theme to sustainable consumption of marine products, through the role of science and Chefs as influencers of the consumption habits of the population, as well as the female Chefs committed to the cause in a predominantly masculine profession.

The health of the ocean is in decline. Marine biodiversity is becoming increasingly degraded. In this context, the United Nations has made ocean protection a priority.

Chefs have a vital role in preserving ocean resources through their influence on the diet of mainstream audiences, as well as restaurateurs around the world. From this perspective, World Oceans Day aims to highlight the link between science, sustainable consumption, the influence of Chefs on consumer habits, new generations of cooks and sustainable marine products, as well as the presence women Chefs committed to the cause.

We celebrate World Oceans Day to remind everyone of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. They are the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe. In the end, it is a day to celebrate together the beauty, the wealth and the promise of the ocean.
