Lucknow: Two old issues of triple talaq and polygamy have come up again as the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the cases related to them a fresh in the first week of September.

The Court has already issued notices to the Muslim Personal Law Board and other concerned bodies of the minority community and asked them to submit their replies within six weeks.

The Court is of the view that these issues could be considered by a larger bench if the old judgments require this.

Simultaneously, the Court has rejected the plea of the Board that these issues should not be debated on the news channels. The Board’s argument, as always, has been that these issues are matters of personal laws of the minority community and, as such, there should be no discussion or interference by others.

The Court would like to hear these cases as they have been filed by a number of women and other organizations despite old Court’s judgements. These organizations favour a fresh look in view of the changed circumstances and outlook.

Whatever may the court’s verdict, a change has been already noticed in Sitapur area of the state. A Muslim leader has launched a campaign against killing of female foetus. He has been regularly addressing the Muslim crowd after each namaz and asking them stop this practice wherever prevalent.

He has drawn support from some Muslim organizations too which are backing him to the hilt. A Fatwah has been issued to in this regard as well. In support, he has been quoting one of the prophets who had advised against this practice which was prevalent then in some Arab coun
