Story of a regular drinker who has lived for more than 100 years
Lucknow: An American lady, Pauline Spagnola, has proved all medical practitioners, who advice against alcoholic drinks on health ground, wrong. At an age of 105, she drinks alcoholic beverages ,and that too, daily. The quantity depends on her mood and body condition.
She does not believe that liquor consumption is injurious to health and she has a reason to say so. In a social media post, the lady says that she drinks regularly and as often as needed and that she does not remember when she had sent water down her throat last.
She decides which alcoholic beverage to take in the light of her physical condition. For example, she takes beer when she is facing indigestion. She takes white wine in case she finds that her digestion system is not working properly. Red wine is her favourite when her blood pressure is low. Scotch is her medicine for high blood pressure.
The lady is a role model for habitual drinkers. For non-drinkers she is an enigma. No word is enough to describe her.
She is, in any case, a good subject for further study on the effect of alcoholic drink. Most of the researches done so far seem to suggest that consumption of certain amount of alcohol is not bad for health. But if you go beyond a limit it is harmful. The limit fixed by some researchers is two pegs for men with normal health who drink daily and one peg for women. Some others are totally against consumption of liquor.
According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, "moderate alcohol consumption is defined as having up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men. This definition is referring to the amount consumed on any single day and is not intended as an average over several days."
Some studies done in that country, however, show link of consumption of liquor to breast cancer and lever cancer as well as to some other type of cancers. "If you reduce alcohol intake you can reduce the incidence of head and neck cancer ", says one study. Heart gets some benefit by consumption of liquor. There are benefits to some other organs too, says another. None, however, says that it can be used as a medicine.
