New Delhi: Most of the parachutes designed by the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratory were found to be defective, according to Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar.

He gave the number of such parachutes as 28 out of 42,"It was found that cloth material supplied by one particular vendor failed, whereas, 14 parachutes clothes supplied by other vendors were found good."

  • The parachutes were designed by a laboratory of Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE).

What else Parrikar said?

  • ADRDE is the only laboratory in DRDO for designing and development of parachutes.
  • Amount of Rs. 228.25 lakhs has been spent on designing Combat Free Fall (CFF) parachutes.
  • ADRDE had also designed seat ejection parachutes for fighter aircraft.
  • Recovery parachutes for heavy drop system and weapon parachutes.
  • All the categories of parachutes were being used by the army, only the paratrooper parachutes were found defective.
