Operation Blue Star Anniv: Pro-Khalistan slogans raised in Golden Temple

Amritsar: On the 33rd anniversary of Operation Blue Star, some Sikh fanatics were heard raising pro-Khalistan slogans inside the Golden Temple premises here on Tuesday.

Radical Sikh organisation Dal Khalsa also called for a bandh which was observed by the holy city on the anniversary of the 1984 military operation that was launched to pull out heavily-armed terrorists from the Golden Temple.

Heavy police force in civil clothes, along with SGPC’s task force, was also deployed to foil any effort of disturbing peace in the region.

As soon as the Akal Takht (the highest temporal seat for Sikhs) Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh started his customary address, SAD (A) supporters led by Simranjit Singh Mann raised slogans of 'Khalistan Zindabad'.

The pro-Khalistan slogans, however, could not stop the Jathedar from continuing his address to the Sikh community. Some of the Sikh zealots also raised slogans against Gurbachan Singh.

The 'Sarbat Khalsa' in his address held former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal of needlessly intervening in Sikh religious affairs including in the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).

Scores of people reached at the memorial dedicated to those killed in 1984 Operation Blue Star on the Golden Temple. Keeping the anniversary in the view, security forces have been kept on high-alert across Punjab.

Following apprehensions of a possible objection by Sikh fanatics to the address by the Akal Takht Jathedar at the Golden Temple, Amritsar city was studded with about 5,000 security personnel to maintain law and order.

A total of 15 companies of paramilitary forces that include CRPF, ITBP and RAF have been deployed in different parts of Punjab, with seven of them posted in Amritsar itself.
