I am innocent, says suspended BRD Medical College Principal

Lucknow: Giving clarification over the deaths of several children due to shortage of oxygen supply at the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur, suspended Principal Rajeev Mishra said on Sunday that he was innocent.

It may be recalled that Uttar Pradesh Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh had on Saturday suspended the BRD Medical College Principal over negligent behaviour.

Speaking over a news channel over his suspension, Mishra said, "The government did what it had to but I am innocent. It was the fault of the supplying firm, Pushpa Sales, which led to the deaths of over 60 children."

"The hospital had an eight-year contract with Pushpa Sales for oxygen supply. The company should have abided by the deal," he added, pointing out, "If a proper probe by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will find me innocent."

He also backed UP Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh, saying, "The minister was absolutely right in saying that children here die in August every year."

He also rubbished the allegations of the supplying firm that the hospital principal was demanding commission for clearing of its previous bills. The company had claimed that the medical college did not clear its debts of around Rs 70 lakh despite repeated reminders.

Despite the massive media coverage and assurance of proper treatment from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath himself, kids are still dying in the hospital. On Sunday morning, another four-year-old kid lost his life due to deadly encephalitis, taking the toll to 68.
