Shimla: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) might be heading for a clear majority in Himachal Pradesh elections, but in a shocking news, their chief ministerial candidate Prem Kumar Dhumal has been defeated by Congress' Rajinder Rana on Sujanpur assembly seat.

Earlier in the day, BJP MLA Virender Kanwar, who emerged victorious from Kutlehar seat, had claimed that he was ready to hand over his seat to Prem Kumar Dhumal if he loses his seat.

The defeat has come as a major embarrassment for BJP as it had declared Dhumal as its CM candidate before the elections.

Now, it is also going to be a tough task for the party to select a CM candidate considering none other BJP member has a similar stature as Dhumal in the hilly state.

As per the latest trends, BJP has already won 15 seats while is leading on 29 others to take its total to 44. Congress, which is the ruling party in the state so far, has won 8 seats while in leading on 13 others, which makes the total to 21. It is worth mentioning that 35 is the magic figure in the 68-member assembly.

The November 9 elections recorded a voter turnout of over 75 per cent. A total of 377 candidates were in the fray for the 68 seats in this election. While BJP and Congress contested the election on all seats, the BSP fielded 42 contestants followed by the CPI(M) 14, the Swabhiman party and the Lok Gathbandhan Party six each and the CPI 3.

In the 2012 state assembly elections, the Congress had claimed majority with 36 seats while BJP had managed only 26 seats.
