Ruinous Mudslide flooding causes chaos in city of Brazil

SAO PAULO: Mudslides and deluge caused by heavy rainfall, on Friday, have killed at least 16 people, including a four-year-old boy, in the outskirts of Brazil’s largest city, Sao Paulo.

Captain Marcos Palumbo of the Sao Paulo Fire Department said that mudslides, along with the flood, destroyed many houses, killing nine people in Francisco Morato and four in Maripora while another eight are reported missing.

Three people drowned being swept away by the floodwater, one each in the cities of Guarulhos, Cajamar and Itatiba.

  • The rains also halted commuter train service for several hours.
  • Traffic in the city was thrown into chaos while the heavy rainfall closed the Sao Paulo international airport for six long hours overnight.
