Chandigarh: The Haryana government on Friday suspended the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Panchkula district as he failed to contain violence erupted after the special CBI court held Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh guilty in a sexual harassment case earlier in the day.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state took the decision accusing the DSP of not taking the necessary steps despite knowing that Dera followers had gathered in the region in large numbers and the violence may explode if the special CBI court convicts the Dera chief in the rape case.

It is worth mentioning that the DSP did not impose Section 144 in the region and soon the region turned into a battleground with the supporters of self-styled spiritual leader resorting to violence again the police personnel as well as the media persons.

Resultantly, at least 30 people have died while over 250 have got injured in the violence. More than 150 vehicles were also set ablaze by the violent followers apart from damaging lots of government properties.

Earlier in the day on Friday, the Special CBI court held the self styled Godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh guilty of raping and sexually exploiting two female disciples in the year 2002. Court will announce the quantum of punishment on August 28.
