Congress names Punia, RPN Singh as in-charges of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand

Lucknow: Giving huge responsibilities to Rajya Sabha member PL Punia and former central minister RPN Singh, Congress party on Wednesday elevated them as the in-charges of party's Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand units, respectively.

Significantly, Chhattisgarh is schedule to go for polls in 2018, and it is being said that Punia has been given the charge in the state to ensure the party's good performance in the elections.

It may be mentioned that Punia has earlier served as the Chairperson of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and as MP from Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki constituency from 2009 to 2014. Since 2014, he is a Rajya Sabha member.

Interestingly, former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, who has now snapped ties with Congress party to form his own political outfit, also belongs to backward class. Punia, who is a popular Dalit face of Congress, is now being looked as the new hope for the party in the upcoming elections.

On the other hand, Jharkhand, which is currently being ruled by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), will go for polls in 2019. So, RPN Singh has almost two years from here onwards to restore Congres' existence in the state.

Apart from these two decisions, All India Congress Committee (AICC) has also announced to constitute a Communication Strategy Group in the party.
