Mumbai: At a time when there is lack of clean and safe drinking water across the parts of India, many scientist have found the answer against water crises.

Scientists at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre have successfully developed a filtration technique that removes the salinity of the seawater.

  • The method can be used to treat groundwater that contains arsenic and uranium and make it safe for drinking.
  • A pilot project which is currently operational in Tamil Nadu's Kalpakkam processes nearly 6.3 million litre seawater every day.

  • Now this purified water is used at the Kudankulam nuclear reactor.
  • Though water is free from salinity and safe for drinking yet it is not provided for human consumption.
  • Several plants have been installed in Punjab, West Bengal and Rajasthan.
  • "BARC has developed several membranes, by which, at a very small cost, groundwater contaminated by uranium or arsenic can be purified and make fit for drinking," said KN Vyas, Director at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre"
