Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan, who was given an extension of three months, has retired from his post on Thursday. He was given a warm send off during a farewell party today.

Meanwhile, the outgoing chief secretary Alok Ranjan has been made advisor to the chief minister in the rank of cabinet minister. He will assume charge of his new assignment on Friday.

Praveer Kumar, who is at present Agriculture Production Commissioner (APC), has been asked to officiate as the Chief Secretary till further orders. The appointment of regular chief secretary is likely to be made after chief minister Akhilesh Yadav returns from his foreign trip. He had gone to London on a personal visit and likely to be back on July 4.

The delay in the appointment of chief secretary has further hot up the race for the top administrative post of the state though Praveer Kumar is considered to be the choice of chief minister himself. Others in race included Principal Secretary, irrigation Deepak Singhal who is said to be close to senior minister Shivpal Singh Yadav.

On earlier occasion, Deepak Singhal had lobbied hard for the post of APC but lost out to Praveer Kumar on that occasion.
