Xiaomi, Redmi split, establish themselves as independent brands: Report

Beijing: Chinese electronics major Xiaomi has made an announcement, on Thursday that it is making its way away from Redmi.

Without revealing the reason behind this move, Xiaomi said that Redmi will now be an independent brand.

Redmi was a subsidiary of Xiaomi, which was originally introduced as a budget smart phone by none other than Xiaomi in July 2013.

Gizmo China reported late on Thursday that Xiaomi will make 'Redmi' an independent brand. The launch event of Redmi as an independent brand will take place on January 10, 2019 in China.

During this event, Redmi will launch its first smartphone with a 48-megapixel camera sensor.

It is to be mention that Redmi and Redmi Note series are very popular among users as they use less-expensive components and thus is more cost-effective.

However later, the founder of Xiaomi, Lei Jun, revealed the reason for making Redmi an independent brand. He said that the main reason behind separating both Xiaomi and Redmi brands is their 'focus'. He said that Mi and Redmi brands are totally different.

He further said where the Mi focuses on high-end devices, the Redmi focuses on value-for-money budget smart phones.

Also, the Redmi devices are primarily sold through e-commerce platforms while, Mi devices are not e-commerce focused," Lei said on a Chinese micro-blogging site.
