Safeguarding Your UPI ID: NPCI's Move to Enhance Security

New Delhi: If you are one of the people that creates digital payments and uses UPI, you should be aware of an important technique. Because of the way the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has been developed, payments may be made without the use of the internet. Essentially, it doesn't matter if you have the most recent foldable smartphone or a feature phone with an outdated design; UPI payments may be conducted on any device. It is not even necessary to use a specific application.

If the device does not have internet access, payment may be performed by dialing the USSD number *99#. Keep in mind that your bank account should also be connected to the phone number from which you are calling this code. You can check this by going to the dialler on your phone and entering the code. In this method, if your smartphone runs out of mobile data or if you use a feature phone, you may utilize the dialler on the phone to make UPI payments even if your device is out of mobile data.

The first step is to launch the dialler application on your smartphone or feature phone. To make a call, dial the USSD code *99# and press the call button. Now, a pop-up menu will appear on your phone, displaying a variety of possibilities. You will be able to check your account balance, examine your profile information, obtain transaction statements, and modify your UPI PIN from this page. To transfer money, you must choose one of the 'Send Money' choices from the drop-down menu.

Following your selection of the Send Money option, you will be prompted to provide information on the individual to whom the money is to be delivered. The quickest and most convenient method is to utilize his cell phone number, albeit this number should be connected to his bank account as well. You may alternatively choose to use your UPI ID or bank account details, if they are available, and then input the information connected with them before proceeding to the next step. Following this, the screen will display the name of the person who is linked with the phone number that was entered.

After the name of the payment recipient (the person to whom you want to transfer money) appears on the screen, you must enter the amount in the appropriate field. Immediately after clicking on Ready, you will be prompted to add a note, which you may choose to skip by selecting the number 1. As the last step, you will be required to enter your UPI PIN. Once you've entered your PIN and selected Send, the following menu will offer you confirmation of the transaction, and the reference with payment amount will appear on the ID screen when you've pressed Enter.

It is now possible to withdraw money from ATMs using UPI-enabled smartphone applications (such as BHIM, Boxes, and G-Pay) on mobile phones. This is a recent addition to the list of features available. You aren't even required to use a debit or credit card to complete the transaction. For cardless payments, the ATM will employ a QR code, which will need to be scanned on the phone by the customer. The QR code will automatically update in a short time, allowing for secure payments to be completed.
