Union Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the government will soon discuss the deepfake issue with social media platforms.

If the platforms do not take adequate steps in this regard, they will not get protection under the 'Safe Harbor' immunity clause of the IT Act.

Talking to the media, he said that the government had recently issued a notice to the companies on the deepfake issue and the platforms also responded. But companies will have to be more aggressive in taking action against such content.

Digitally altering a person's face or body in a video is called deepfake. These videos made with machine learning and artificial intelligence can easily deceive anyone.

Vaishnav said that he is going to hold a meeting of all social media platforms in the next 3-4 days. We will call them to brainstorm on this and ensure that the platforms do enough to stop this (deepfakes) and clean up their systems.

27 companies including Dell, HP, Foxconn and Lenovo have been approved under the new production linked incentive scheme for IT hardware. This step has been taken at a time when India is wooing IT hardware companies with policy attractions and incentive schemes. Of these, about 95 percent i.e. 23 companies are ready to start manufacturing from day one. These companies will invest Rs 3,000 crore.

While addressing the journalists at the Diwali Milan program organized at the BJP headquarters on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also mentioned his resolve to make India a 'developed India'.

Along with this he said that these are not just words but the ground reality. During this, while talking to journalists, he said that it is wrong to misuse Artificial Intelligence (AI) to make 'deep fake videos'.

The media should educate people about this crisis. Taking his point forward, the Prime Minister said that many of his videos are going viral on social media platforms in which he is seen singing songs and playing Garba.
