Mumbai: Expanding its presence in the cricketing world, Star India on Monday acquired the Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights for TV and digital broadcast for a whopping Rs 16,347.50 crore.

The company made the single consolidated bid worldwide during the auctions held here.

Star India has taken the rights of the yearly cricketing extravaganza from 2018 to 2022, edging past Sony.

Initially, 24 companies picked up rights papers to contest for the several rights up for grabs in the auction organised by the BCCI.

Several bigwigs of the ilk of Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, Yahoo, Reliance Jio, STAR India, Sony Pictures, Discovery, Sky, British Telecom and ESPN Digital Media purchased the bid rights papers.

As soon as the news was officially confirmed, people from all across the country rushed to the social platforms and started taking about the development.

People even trolled Sony for showing Amitabh Bachchan-starrer 'Sooryavansham' again and again on their movie channel SET MAX.
