Rio de Janeiro: Indian tennis sensations Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna have cruised into the semi-finals of mixed doubles at the ongoing Rio Olympics Games on Friday.

The Indian duo managed to defeat the world class pair of Andy Murray and Heather Watson by 6-4,6-4.

Sania-Bopanna will play next against the winner of Venus Williams-Rajeev Ram of United States vs Italian pair of Fabio Fognini and Roberta Vinci.

Earlier, the most promising Indian duo started their campaign on a positive note, defeating Australian pair of Sam Stosur and Jonathan Peers in straight sets in the mixed doubles tennis event.

For Rohan, mixed doubles is the lone hope to win his maiden Olympic medal.

Rohan Bopannad and Leander Paes faced early exit after they lost to Polish pair Marcin Matkowski and Lukasz Kubot 2-0 in Round 1.

Sania who was paired up with Prarthana Thombare in women’s doubles event, also failed to qualify for the second round after losing 2-1 to Chinese pair of Zhang Shuai and Peng Shuai.
