Protesting wrestlers joined duty

It was earlier reported that the wrestlers had withdrawn their protest but later on Sakshi Malik clarified that their protest would continue until they got justice. Satish Punia also confirmed it and said that the reports they had taken their FIR back was a rumour.

Wrestlers Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, who had been protesting against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and BJP MP Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, have returned to their jobs. They all work in the Railway.

It was earlier reported that the wrestlers had withdrawn their protest but later on Sakshi Malik clarified that their protest would continue until they got justice. Satish Punia also confirmed it and said that the reports they had taken their FIR back was a rumour.

The development came after a meeting between the protesting wrestlers and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. According to some Media reports Sakshi Malik backed out of the protest. But After this Rio Olympic Bronze medallist Sakshi posted a tweet saying that these rumours. “This protest will continue until get the justice” she said.

This incident became a serious topic when it was said that Brijbhushan had sexually assaulted a minor wrestler also. An FIR was registered against Brijbhushan by the father of girl. Now the police are investigating the matter.

What had happened?

Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik held a protest against Brijbhushan at Jantar-Mantar in Delhi. It was alleged that Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brijbhushan Singh had sexually assaulted women wrestlers.

A committee was formed by Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur in January this year to look into the charges. The wrestlers were not happy with the committee’s report and continued their protest.

On April 28, Supreme Court ordered the police to register a case against Singh. The FIRs contained charges of molestation and also POCSO Act.

A clash had occurred between the police officers and the wrestlers on 3rd May.

On 7th May a Khap Mahapanchayat of Rajasthan, Hariyana, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab gave until 9th June to the government to arrest the WFI chief.

A news was released from a media source in which it was said that Delhi police had no evidence against Brij Bhushan. Delhi police refuted this news through a tweet. Later on it was deleted.

On 3rd June Delhi police examined 4 witnesses in this case who reportedly confirmed the allegations against Singh. One Olympian, Commonwealth gold medallist, International referee and a state level coach were included in this.
